You may remember the small dash I built recently. It's a nice little quirky device (it fits the Twingo perfectly), but its biggest advantage is also its biggest disadvantage. It's compact, but working over WiFi adds a small lag. Reading data via USB should reduce the lag. The only issue is that getting an ESP32 to read USB data isn't exactly easy. I have an idea that I'll reveal a bit later, but also it's difficult to squeeze all that data onto a 2-inch display. I decided to move to a Raspberry Pi and a larger screen instead. I bought a BigTreeTech Pad 5, installed an RPi CM4, fired up Claude, and started experimenting. I want a retro-inspired design that's clean, readable on track, and pleasant to look at at the same time. You can see a mock-up of the design below. It's not ready yet, but I think the final result will look something like this. I also need to display real OBD-II data. I'm struggling with that a bit at the moment, but I think I'll get it working.
